畢業在即，想關心我或者純粹想與我談天的朋友總會談到我的前路。為咗令到每一位朋友能夠保留一啲時間同我傾一啲比較有意義/比較新奇嘅話題，我決定趁溫習週（而我星期四仲有一科midterm）出呢一篇常見問題解答，等大家睇完之後可以唔使再問。而且，相信我在4月會更加忙不開交（對不起，我的四川和台灣遊記估計要5月才能再次開始出T_T），所以趁著如今我先出一篇。順道可以練習中文，以預備LANG1113（中文傳意技巧）的各種寫作測驗。
（英文版的意義不一定與中文版完全一樣，兩者都為準。）
I am graduating soon. Nearly every friend who knows it would ask about my future path or career. To save time for friends who really want to talk to me, so that we may talk about something more meaningful and exciting, I would like to publish this FAQ to answer the questions about my future career. On the other hand, this article can practice my English skills so that I may write better, despite the grammar of this writing would not be scrutinized.
(The English and Chinese version is NOT exactly equal, but both would have key points)
1) 你幾時會畢業? / 你何時會畢業? / When would you graduate?
如無意外，假設我能夠同時在LANG1113、SOSC3520、IELM3270或IELM4650
、以及IELM4990(FYP)中取得合格的成績，我就能夠於6月完成我的畢業要求，然後於11月會有正式的畢業典禮，可以獲得一張有科大校監梁振英（689）簽發的畢業證書。
If I can get a pass grade in LANG1113, SOSC3520, one of IELM3270 and IELM4650, and IELM4990(FYP), I will finish the graduation requirement of Bachelor of Engineering(Logistics Management and Engineering) with a minor in Liberal Studies on late May.
2) 畢咗業會做乜? / 畢業後有甚麼計劃? / What are you going to do after graduation?
我打算在畢業後會繼續升學。大概會在香港科技大學修讀哲學博士(PhD)。
I am planning to pursue further study. I think it would be a PhD in HKUST.
3) 點解可以直接讀PhD嘅? / 為何可以直接修讀哲學博士? / Why are you able to pursue a PhD?
是這樣的，話說我原本也不知道原來一個學士畢業生是能夠直接讀PhD，直至當我去了一個美國升學的講座問講者問題的時候，他告訴我一個成績及背景好的學士畢業生是能夠直接讀哲學博士。然後當我去找教授收我的時候，他又願意收我為一個哲學博士學生。或許是因為我的學習成績比較高吧。
Indeed, it is common that a undergraduate student pursue PhD directly. It is not necessary to have a master degree as long as you are qualified and there is a professor agree to supervise you. Therefore, I encourage you to try if you think that you are a good learner in this education system.
4) 你GPA幾多? / 你的GPA是多少? / How high is your GPA?
秘密，但「過三」(高於3.0/4.3)。
My GPA is higher than 3.0, out of 4.3. The exact number is confidential.
5) 你讀乜? / 你將會選修甚麼科目? / Which area would you choose to study?
如果能夠順利於六月畢業的話，我將會讀一個主要研究交通運輸的哲學博士( 土木工程(civil engineering) )。雖然看起來與我現在所讀的工業工程沒關係，但是其實是有關係。例如我有一個科目是整個科目都學交通運輸。
If I graduate on June, I'll take a PhD in civil engineering. The research focus would be about transportation. Although it sounds not related to 'Industrial Engineering', it is really a close field. For instance, there is a required course namely 'Transportation System' in my graduation requirement.
6) 點解唔去外國讀? / 為何你不在外國升學? / Why don't you study abroad?
第一、因為我覺得香港科技大學已經是一所世界頂尖的研究型大學，不單有亞洲MIT(麻省理工學院)的美譽，更號稱Asia No. 0 (亞洲第零大學)，比大部分海外升學的選擇好。
第二、我熟悉香港的一切。我精通當地最常用的言語─粵語，亦熟悉英語和J5電視台所用的普通話。亦了解幾乎所有香港人的傳統文化、潮語、港式英語等。不需要任何時間去適應。相比外國升學，必然會有文化差異，使我需要時間去適應，這會令我在讀書以外有額外的挑戰。
第三、我在香港有很多朋友和家人，在香港讀書可以讓我繼續與他們見面。尤其是在教會當中我可以繼續在最輕鬆的環境事奉神，不會像在土耳其時因語言和文化問題而事奉無力。
第四、我已經去過一次外國交流，個人認為已經有充足的國際視野和獨立能力，不需要更多。而且我看不到這些國際視野和獨立能力的重要性。可能會有人說我是井底之蛙，然而，我想反問的是：「你要知多少才不算是井底之蛙？」我們一生都不可能完全追尋所有的「視野」和「經歷」，即使我住在香港，我還是不肯定旺角魚蛋革命發生一切的來龍去脈，還是搞不通為甚麼李波會願意與中共合作。所以，基本上我不可能不是一隻井底之蛙。留在香港，也可以訓練我的邏輯思考，對嗎？
First, HKUST is a world class research-based university. It is recognized as Asia Number 0 university. The engineering school has a high ranking. Therefore, it is better than most study opportunity aboard.
Second, I am familiar with Hong Kong. Cantonese, the main language in Hong Kong, is my mother language. I also proficient in Mandarin and English, which is also common in Hong Kong. Also, there is no culture barrier in Hong Kong for me. In contrast with studying aboard, there must be some culture barrier that needs time to overcome. It would be a challenge for me other than the study. It is better to study without any culture barrier.
Third, I treasure my friends and family, and most of them are living in Hong Kong. Studying in Hong Kong allows me to meet them easily. I am more confident to interact with other Christians in Hong Kong to worship. It would be difficult to engage in the ministry with language and culture barrier, as I do not speak perfect English and Mandarin.
Fourth, I have been to exchange before. That exchange experience had broadened my international horizon and allowed me to try to live independently. I think my international horizon and independence is enough now. I don't need another experience of studying aboard for more international experience.
7) 你真係好，咁有錢可以讀書 / 你真好，有經濟能力繼續讀書 / Do you need to pay for the study?
其實我只是一個窮學生，例如我上一部手提電話用了3年，我現在所用的手提電腦已經用了4年半。而且讀研究型的學位有政府資助兼有錢收(上年是$15000)，不過就可能要為教授做研究，並且有3個學期要作助教。不過，我每年還是要交$42100的學費。
Yes, I have to pay for the study. However, there is a postgraduate studentship (about $15000 per month) which allows me to focus on study, not need to be concerned about other sources of income to support myself, but I have to pay $42100 tuition fee per annum. I would have to be a TA for 3 semesters.
8) 畢業之後會做Professor? / 你畢業後會否成為一位教授? / Would you become a professor after graduation?
我也希望如此。然而，因應我的際遇和選擇，或許我會不再在學術界發展。即使在學術界發展，可能會做研究員(Researcher)或講師，不一定能直接找到一份教席。反正是大約四年後的事，到時再算。
Hope so. However, it depends on my opportunity and choices. Probably, I won't work in academic field after my PhD graduation. Even though I decide to work in academic field, maybe I would be a researcher or lecturer, not necessarily be a professor.
Anyway, it is at least about four years afterward. I don't even know what will happen tomorrow.
